On Saturday we have our final workshop, where everyone will complete their hangings and accompanying writing – ready for our big exhibition in November – more news on that soon!

    Hi everybody –

    Are you feeling creative?

We have spaces left for our creative workshop this Thursday 10th September. It will be held at Exeter Community Centre from 10 – 12.30.

The workshop will be run by a professional artist. She will help us to create beautiful wall-hangings. Our hangings will tell a ‘fashion story’ from history or our own lives.

Please email changingfashion@devongrapevine.co.uk to book your place, or just turn up on the day. Invite your friends and family! Children are very welcome.

Please wear old clothes or bring an apron. We will provide materials, but you can also bring anything that you want to include in your hanging. You could include: fabric, buttons, ribbons, lace, photographs, newspaper clippings, maps, poems, songs… Anything you like!

Our trip last week to the Totnes Museum of Fashion was fascinating. It’s a tiny museum in a beautiful old house. We learned a lot about the changing shape of fashion and how and why clothing changes with time. I learned that “stays” (or corsets) helped clothing “stay” in place, and that there was a time when women wore hip pads to give them curves.

@silvia – that sounds amazing! I’m sad that we missed out on your presentation.

If you’re interested in corsets, I think you’re going to like what’s in store for you at Totnes Museum of Fashion and Textiles… I visited yesterday: it’s corsets and crinolines galore!

We had a great workshop with E-J this morning! We had some fascinating conversations, and saw some beautiful photos and items of clothing.

We talked about all sorts of things, including:

    • Class and wealth – how the rich lead fashion.
    • How fashion can be about lots of different things – like self-expression, being part of a group, feeling beautiful.
    • Luxury materials (like cashmere and silk).
    • Branding.
    • How clothing has traditionally marked the transition from boy to man in several cultures.
    • How ideas get ‘recycled’ and re-used.
    • How fashion affects people’s health, and can prevent work and movement.
    • How clothes are often made in communities.
    • How fashions are worn differently by different ages and cultures.
    • How climate and environment affects clothing materials in different countries.
    • How style changes over time.
    • How designs can travel because of trade and colonisation.
    • How similar techniques or motifs are used in different cultures.
    • How traditional crafts continue today.

What was your favourite idea from today? What other ideas do you have about fashion?

What would you have shared if you had been there, @angel, @silvia?

That was a truly great day out at Killerton. We were very lucky with the weather and learned a lot about how fashion and clothing has changed in the UK. And I loved seeing everyone dressing up! Can’t wait for the next trip, and to see the photos taken by Clive @meridianraw.

What did you enjoy most @angel, @silvia, Musarat @hikmatdevoncic

We’re excited to tell you that…

Exploring Changing Fashion Across Cultures is live!

Over the next 6 months, we will be running a project which explores the meaning of clothing in different places and time periods. We want to use fashion as a starting point to get people thinking, talking, exploring, drawing, making and creating!

We will visit historical locations all over Devon. We will look at some precious clothes and accessories from England and the rest of the world. We will be shown the objects by experts, who will tell us all about them.

We will think about what ideas and feelings these items inspire in us. What do they remind us of? How do they link to things from our own cultures?

We will run creative workshops where we can explore these connections further. The workshops will be led by a professional, who will help us create things, and share in conversations all about clothing and culture.

There will be 4 trips and 4 workshops over the next few months. These will be followed by a big exhibition and celebration of everyone’s work in November.

You can attend all of the trips and workshops – or come along to just one. There is no cost, and we can provide interpreting services if language is a concern.

The dates for the trips and workshops are:

Wednesday 29th July (9.45 – 3): trip to Killerton House
    Wednesday 5th August (9.30 – 1): workshop #1 (at Killerton House)

Thursday 27th August (10.15 – 4.30): trip to Totnes Museum of Fashion and Textiles
    Wednesday 2nd September (10 – 12): workshop #2 (at St Sidwell’s Community Centre, Exeter)

Friday 25th September (10 – 12): trip to Exeter Museum (RAMM)
    Thursday 1st October (10 – 12): workshop #3 (at RAMM)

Thursday 15th October (9.30 – 12.30): trip to the Ark (RAMM museum stores)
    Saturday 17th October (10 – 1): workshop #4 (at St Sidwell’s Community Centre, Exeter)

Please email Nicole at changingfashion@devongrapevine.co.uk or call the office on (01392) 277807 for more information. We’d also love to hear from any volunteers who’d like to support participants’ engagement with the project.

We really hope to see as many of you as possible at the trips and workshops!

Looking forward to talking fashion with you all!

    Nicole
