Hi Graham,
Regarding your Spainish queries – I think I can help you.
I have a friend here in Exeter (Vanessa) who will be travelling to Bolivia on 22nd March for 3.5 months voluntary work. To prepare for her trip she’s been doing a Spanish/English language swap with a lady here in Exeter called Belen. With Vanessa leaving Exeter very shortly Belen is keen to meet a new person to practice her English and to help that person with their Spanish.
There is also a monthly Spanish conversation group I can put you in touch with here in Exeter.
I have contacted Vanessa already and she is keen to put you in touch with Belen and this group.
I will send you a friend request here and pass you the details in a private message, once you have added me to your friend’s list.
(By the way, I don’t know if you can think back to 1988 but I worked with both you and Michael Northcott for a brief spell in 1988 – it is a long time ago now though!)
With best wishes,
Maria Pylypiak

Hi Graham – I spent a year in Central America (and visited Colombia) 25 years ago – great area of the world! I loved Cartagena and spent several lovely weeks in Parque Tairona. Have you been in touch with our English class co-ordinator Kate to chat about volunteering?

Hi, I am a property lawyer by day but I would like to be able to do some voluntary English teaching in my spare time as well as practicing my Spanish. I love travelling and spent 11 months in 2013/2014 in Central and South America. I spent nearly 5 months in Colombia. I loved the entire trip.
I completed the Celta course in Bogota Colombia last year and now would like to practice teaching English. .I would like to be able to observe other English teachers in class now and again to learn from them as my teaching experience was just in Colombia during the course and a little bit of volunteer work since I returned to the UK.
It would be great to take part in a language exchange where I can practice some Spanish in exchange for practicing some English.
Please let me know if you can help with either .

Hello to all!
I’m Stephen. I spent my early years growing up and working in Hertfordshire (outside North West London) before leaving the UK in 2002 to go travelling. I then taught English in Japan from 2006 to 2011. Afterwards I returned to the UK to study for a Masters in TESOL at the University of Exeter. Earlier this year my wife and I bought a house here, so I guess it’s the plan to stick around a bit!
I’m thinking about becoming a volunteer teacher at Devon Grapevine, and I would also like to meet up with fellow internationally minded people. I can speak Japanese (Intermediate on a good day, pre-int on a bad day) so would be interested in doing some Japanese-English exchange lessons.
Look forward to meeting you all soon.

Hi Sergio, just wondering, are you a Chemist or a Pharmacist? If the latter I work with a Pharmacist from Madrid (also called Maria!). She has lived in Exeter for over 2 years now and I could introduce you if you like. (By the way I was born in Exeter, my mum is English and my dad from Ukraine). Hope you settle in quickly and make lots of friends. It’s good to live by the coast that’s for sure! Maria
-
Hi Sergio, welcome to Exeter. I’ve only been here a year but it seems a very friendly place with plenty going on – even though I’m not sure it can quite compete with Barcelona… at least weather-wise
Good luck, hope you settle in soon.
-
Hi, I’m Sergio, I’m chilean and a chemist. I moved to Exeter from Barcelona (Spain) with my girlfriend two weeks ago. I’m here because I’d like to meet people and practice English. If there’s some people interested in to practice Spanish I’ll be happy to make a language exchange.
-
Hi Geoffrey, nice to hear from you. I think if we had moved to Exeter straight from London I’d feel exactly the same. But having spent 13 years in the middle of Dartmoor (Moretonhampstead), Exeter seem quite “urban” to us now… not the same as London, of course, but does seem to offer some of the best bits of both worlds.

In London, and particularly in the World Service, I was lucky enough to make friends from many different cultures, which is something I have missed ever since I left (even though I do travel up to London at least a couple of times a year to see some of them).
I now work as a freelance translator/copywriter from home which I enjoy – but being stuck at your desk for long hours can be a little isolating. So I’m looking forward to meeting & chatting to new people.

Hi Alina – have you had a look at the thread about bilingual baby research – something you might like to get involved in! You’re not far from Torbay – you could also get involved with Imagine multicultural group (links to their facebook page) who run various events – I think Stan could tell you more if you leave a comment on his page.
Check out your local library as well – they often have groups for parents of toddlers (bounce and rhyme for instance) – and may have a reading group for adults.

Hi Geoffrey.
Yes, it is a very good suggestion for me to go to the children’s centre. As a matter of fact this is part of my targets for the coming week. I am also looking for a school for my little son.
We moved in Newton Abbot about a month ago and things are still new to me here. We lived in Bovey Tracey for ten months. It was nice and quiet there and I took my little son to some toddler groups in the area because I thought he needed it. In Romania he was used to be among many children so I think he missed that.
I am also looking for some activity for myself because I’m a quite active person.
What do you think is the best way for me to help my little one learn English ? I am a teacher of English, I had no problems with teaching my eldest son ( who is very happy at his school here where he is highly appreciated) but we lived in Romania at the time he learnt English.
I was thinking that the best way for the baby is to let him learn on his own. He only starts talking Romanian now. I don’t want to confuse him. Still, guess what : he says ‘bye’ to people. And I did not tell him anything. He just imitates us.I think he will learn English at school. This is why I am looking for one now.
This would be a long talk. Maybe there is another topic for this subject. Have to check -

Hi Alina,
I work at the Children’s Centre here in Bideford where I help to run a group for families who are raising their children in more than one language. It’s one of the nicest parts of my job as I get to meet people from all over the world. Our Romanian mum moved here from Exeter about three years ago and regularly visits the centre. She has made a few good friends here but would love to make contact with other Romanian families.

Hi Cait – thanks for the introduction! Do you have connections with Exeter central library – they are also members of the grapevine/
There are quite a few multicultural families on the Grapevine – and there used to be several groups operating around the county although I am not sure how many still run. You are not far from Torbay so might want to get involved with Imagine – you can find out more here. You are also very welcome to start a discussion to find other multicultural families on the Grapevine – I am sure people would respond.

Dear Grapevine
Hi! I’m a Counsellor in private practice, bird watcher, Guardian reader, Pagan-Quaker – moved to Exeter with my wife Chrissy Allott a couple of years ago. As ex-aid workers in health services we miss the vibrancy of a multi-cultural community in the Caribbean, in Africa, PNG or even in Oxford where I lecturered at Brookes University, so want to involve more in Exeter and Grapewine: we love the Respect Festival (where I heard about you) and you sounds a good thing!

Hi everyone,
I am Sam, a researcher in the babylab at Plymuth University. Here we are very interested in how children learn two languages at the same time and despite not being bilingual myself i am fascinated by how babies and young children manage to learn two languages with apparent ease.
I have lived in Devon since I was 5 years old living in the Midlands of the UK prior to that and love living here. The South West is such a lovely place to live and I have been very happy here.

Hello everyone, my name’s Lucy and I’m writing on behalf of Exeter University’s World Music Choir. We’re a fun, friendly, non-auditioned choir that anyone is welcome to join. We rehearse on Thursdays from 4.30-6pm in Cornwall House on the campus, and we sing songs from all round the world in lots of different languages. Our brilliant teacher Alise Ojay teaches us all our songs by ear, so no experience is needed to join – only a love of making music! Also, though we’re based at the university, non-students of all ages are more than welcome, as we want our choir to be as diverse as possible. Please feel free to send me a message any time if you’d like to know more about the choir
Next Thursday we are giving a performance of all the music we’ve learned this term which all Grapeviners are invited to: click here for more details: http://devongrapevine.co.uk/events/world-music-choir-winter-concert?xg_source=activity
Or to find out more about us and see some videos of past performances, check out our blog at worldmusicchoir.wordpress.com/about.

I lived in Honiton for half a year, but I didn`t find any job, so I had to look for a new place and job to myself.
And finaly I moved to Exmouth on February, and I enjoy this Town, the Jurassic Cost and the red rocks on the sandy beach.

Hi I’m Lyn. Born & brought up in North Devon, lived all over the place including abroad and moved back about a year ago. Loving being back here & meeting so many new friends! I work for North Devon Voluntary Services and love supporting voluntary groups in our area. Every day, I meet amazing people who do so much for others! I am also a volunteer, currently helping: a local foodbank, an environmental community group I helped set up, a local trust, a camera club and a sustainability group. You could say I’m a serial volunteer!

Hi Kim – you live in a lovely area. When I was very small someone told me that Buckfastleigh uses half the letters in our alphabet, with none repeated – this has always stuck with me!
We will be at Exeter Respect this weekend – do come along and say hello- – I’ll be on our stall on Sunday.

Hello members, I am Francesco and I am italian.
I was born in a town called San Severo, in Apulia, South East of Italy.
I have been studying Agricultural Science and I love ecology.
I came in England the 17th of February as a wwoofer, a voluntary job in organic farms(http://www.wwoof.org.uk/).
I worked in three different places: Feniton, Stockland a small village between Honiton and Axminster (East Devon) and finally in Trill Farm, a organic farm and education centre between Musbury and Axminster, near Seaton (East Devon).
I am living in Exeter since the 17th of May.
Now I am working as catering assistant at Holland Hall, a student accomodation of the University of Exeter.
I am attending a course for a Level 2 Diploma in Work Based Environmental Conservation with TCV (The Conservatinon Volunteers) in Exeter.
It is very interesting, because most of the lessons are outdoor and I like to work outdoor.
I am interested in ecological education, healthy food, permaculture and organic farming, and I like to work with the children.
In Italy I tried to undertake a ecology lab with the children that I called Pachamama (http://www.pachamama2010.com) and I am still working and studying to carry on my project.I like reading, going to cinema, cooking, theatre e and travelling.
I like Exeter and the Devon because I think it is the best place in England where I can learn my skills in ecology and organic farming, and because the people is very friendly -

Hello everyone,
I’m an intermittent grapeviner (I use the internet on a ‘need to’ only basis) and this is my first post. Originally from Newcastle (North-East England) I moved with my son (now age 24 and with a family of his own) to the South West in the med 1990’s. Now living in Buckfastleigh I work in Ashburton, Chudleigh and just outside of Newton Abbot as a yoga teacher and yoga therapist and (2 days a week) in a shop. One of my working days is Saturday so I miss out on the get togethers and lots of other events. When I come into Exeter for shopping, a mooch around in a busier environment or a walk by the river or canal it’s usually on a Thursday afternoon or Friday (days off work) and I’ll keep looking out for anything grapeviney going on on these days, and look forward to meeting some of you in the future.
All best wishes, Kim

Hello Grapeviners!
I am new to this network but not new to Devon or the Uk. I am interested in connecting with people from different cultural backgrounds… Makes life richer doesn’t it? I work in well being and personal development, love dancing, yoga, meditation, walking in the beautiful Devon countryside, sharing a meal with friends, all things creative…sadly I can’t make it to the next shared meal event on the 20th but hope to come to the next or some other event.
Warm wishes from a very wet Ashburton

Hello members,
I’m Simone. I was born and I live and work in Germany, Leipzig. In recent years it was a desire to refresh and improve my English. And so I’m happy that I’m here for 8 weeks. It is a short time but I have a wonderful host family and nice colleagues at the work placement. Speaking isn’t especially very well but I will overcome myself. So I look for contacts and I hope I can meet new people with Devon Grapevine.

Hello,
My name is Clara and I am from Spain. I am studying Social Education trough the Spanish Long Distance University so I can be studying, working, enjoying Exeter and learning English here; opportunity that enriches and opens horizons to a world for everyone.

Hello Grapeviners,
My name is Rebecca, I am English and a qualified EFL teacher (although I have not taught for a number of years). I am very interested in other cultures and travelling, so much so that I am going to work as a TEFL teacher abroad again in the next couple of months. I’d like to practise teaching skills again, so I am offering free classes – Tat is going to post my details here: http://devongrapevine.co.uk/private-language-lessons
Other than that, I have lived in Devon for about 8 years, and before that I lived in Australia, Japan and France.
-
It’s good to hear more about your background Ann. And it has made me think = Jenny may be interested in hearing from you (she is doing research around maternity) – you can read more and get in touch with Jenny here. Although the post is a few months old, the research is still going on.
-
You sound very busy, and very experienced, Zoe. I’m interested in the cultural cafe – how did that work?
-
We’re really glad you came across Grapevine too!

Hi members. I’m Tahani from Saudi Arabia. I came to Exeter in 2010. Before that, I worked in Saudi Arabia as an EFL teacher in a college for 13 years. I had to give up my job and stay here with my husband. Back there i participated in online campaigns and petitions that support women rights. I was looking for teaching positions, paid or unpaid, when I came across Grapevine! I’m so glad I did because I don’t any relatives or friends here except my hubby of course!

Hello, I’m Ann. I’m a wife, a mother and a grandmother. I was a social worker then taught PSHE for five years. I have been an ESOL teacher for eight years and give free lessons in Sidmouth (on Fridays). I have lived in many places in the UK and for five years I lived abroad. My husband grew up in Devon and we moved here sixteen years ago and we love it. The small house-church that I belong to often meets in my home and we have a pretty much ‘open door’, which means that, in addition to family members, there are usually other people living in our house too. In the last year we have provided a temporary home for people from the UK, India, Afghanistan, Slovakia, South Africa and Libya. I maintain very close relationships with some of the many people I have taught or provided a home for and count them as family. Having been present at four births during the past three years I am thinking of training as a Doula.

Hello. I am zoe and was born in Liverpool in the UK. I am married and have 4 adult children. I work at Plymouth University and am a multimedia specialist working in DVD production, video streaming and media training. I am a volunteer Harrassment advisor to Staff and Students and also a trained student mediator. I live just under an hour out of Plymouth and think that this might impact a bit on my physical presence but a lot can be done these days using virtual media. That does not mean of course that I am not willing to get involved in attending in person but I do need to take journey times into account. I would be keen to learn about volunteering in support roles as I have experience in this within the University and also in attending court and coronors court. I am studying an OU course in Social Policy and Criminolgy but am at an early stage of this study. I had a kidney transplant in 1998 and can give support and advice in the area of health as I have worked with health profesionals inside and outside the University for many years. Until recently I was tresurer of the cultural cafe on campus and I am keen on making strong links with the local comunity to offer the cafe space and the use of the soon to be revamped Drakes Gardens. Feel free to contact me for any more information.

Hello Grapevine,
we are a very mixed group of 7 women based in Devon ranging from schoolteacher to builder but we all have one thing in common ~ a passion for ATS, American Tribal Style Bellydance. This is a wonderfully eclectic form of bellydance which mixes traditional North African dance with influences from India and Spanish flamenco and the costumes are probably not what you might imagine. Sadly bellydance has earned a reputation over the years as being somewhat titillating and there is a strong movement today to restore it to its rightful place as a dance of women, for women, by women. We regularly perform at events and festivals as well as fund raising for our own supported charities and would love you to take a look at our website if you would like to know more about us and our dance http://www.kalash-tribal.co.uk

Hi Ellie and welcome – I think this looks like a great service, and I will make sure it is flagged up in this week’s weekly email.

HI Ayca – thanks for adding to the discussion – haven’t seen you for ages, must catch up!

Hi Manasvi – great to see you giving so much of your time to voluntary work – I hadn’t heard of STEM ambassadors before, so have just had a quick look!

I’m Maria Pylypiak. I was born in Exeter but have also lived in the Bournemouth and Southampton areas for 15 years. I moved back to Exeter in 2005. I’m mixed heritage with my mum being English and my dad being Ukrainian. I would like to meet and get in touch with other Ukrainians in this area – if there are any about!! Otherwise I have a wide range of interests which includes attending arts and music events.

Hello grapevine people!
I’m Kate O’Neill, I’m Irish and come from Co Down in the north of Ireland. I moved to Devon from Abu Dhabi where I was working, we thought it looked nice and we bought our house online. I love living in Devon, it reminds me of Ireland. I work with the Olive Tree as a teacher and volunteer coordinator which I love.
-
I’m Tat, and my job at the moment is to develop this network. I was born in Devon and moved back here after a 12 year gap, during which I spent some time overseas. I would love to know a little about others’ experiences of living in Devon!

Hi. I’m Christine. I moved with my husband, Ditch and our four teenagers to Devon last year. We’ve spent the last 15 years working for NGOs in Malaysia, Myanmar, Mozambique, Singapore and Borneo. Devon has been quite a change for us all. We like Exeter and its access to the countryside and cream teas.
I’m currently working with OTA as ESOL coordinator and voluntary teacher. -
Hello everyone. I’m Geoff, originally from Newcastle but arrived in Devon with my wife and daughter about six years ago. We lived in London for 12 years before moving here so initially it was a massive culture shock for us, my daughter being a Brixton girl.
I’m currently working at Bideford Bay Children’s Centre as part of the outreach team and am responsible for the bi-lingual group that we run here twice monthly. My professional background is in Primary Education and I worked for four years at the International Community School in London before moving here. -
Hello members, I’m Rehab, born & lived in Egypt. I used to be an architect in Egypt but here I started doing administartive work for Community Safety Project, and now for Grapevine & OTA. I came to Exeter 5 years ago. Exeter is a quiet city with friendly people (most of the time).

We have decided to re-start the “Say Hello!” thread for Grapeviners old and new to introduce themselves.
So – if you haven’t posted anything yet, here’s an easy place to start! Say “hello” and tell Grapeviners something about yourself.
